The K Award Mentoring Program involves a six-month proposal development curriculum characterized by milestone driven progress and formal review by an advisory board of 3-5 advisors. Trainees will apply to the program with an identified primary mentor who the candidate will identify based on the applicant’s career goals and objectives.Â
The K award Mentoring program will begin six months prior to the HIV/AIDS NIH deadline for a given cycle. Advisors will be experienced CFAR faculty with a track record of mentoring and successful funding for trainees. Four months prior to deadline, trainees will present a one page specific aims at an in-person meeting with the mentor and advisory board to consolidate strengths and develop strategies for improvement. Six weeks prior to deadline, they will submit a twelve-page research plan for review and again meet with the advisory panel. After obtaining funding, participants will remain engaged with the curriculum, providing annual progress reports to the advisory panel. The goal of this second phase will be insuring early award productivity and ultimately, advising participants toward successful K to R transition.Â
